Predictions on ‘The Last King of Faerie’ by Cassandra Clare

  • Expected Publication: Nov 3rd 2026
  • Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult, Urban Fantasy
  • Series: The Wicked Powers #1

After an encounter at a nightclub turns into a kidnapping, Drusilla Blackthorn finds herself held prisoner by Prince Ash Morgenstern in the land of Faerie. Despite her circumstances, Dru is drawn to Ash and the darkness that seems to surround him. Meanwhile, Kit Herondale and Ty Blackthorn must set aside their past grievances and join forces on a perilous quest to save everything they cherish.

The Wicked Powers is a series that I have been anticipating since it’s first utterance about a decade ago. The characters have always been one of the most engaging factors of the Shadowhunters universe, and two of my absolute favourites are Ty and Kit. It’s safe to say I will be sat for all eventualities, however I do have some theories/ predictions, on The Last King of Faerie in particular, that I want to discuss here.

General Predictions

  • The title of the book – Last King of Faerie, suggests that two things could happen over the course of the book, or the entire Wicked Powers series: either something happens to the ruling system/ ruler of Faerie so that there is never a King of Faerie again (which would mean something could happen to Kieran so I hope this isn’t the case), 0r something happens to the land of Faerie itself. Neither of which sound very appealing, so we can only hope I’m reading it wrong.
  • What I’m looking forward to most is Kit and Ty’s storyline – the road-trip around Europe sounds super exciting, even though they obviously have a quest to complete. The reason I’m super excited for this storyline especially is because I absolutely adore Kit and Ty, and I can’t wait to finally get more interactions between the two of them considering it’s been eight years since we’ve read about them being in the same room for an extended period of time. I can’t wait to see how their bond develops even more, how they work together despite their issues, how they learn to forgive one another, and their eventual confession (hopefully).
  • The fact that Jaime is missing in Faerie is interesting. I’m not sure of the significance of his disappearance, so much as I think that Dru will eventually find him. My thoughts and feelings on Jaime are quite neutral, so I’m not as invested in his storyline as I am in how it affects Dru.

    Predictions based on Snippets/ Excerpts:

    • There have been some significant things that have happened so far in the snippets/ excerpts that have been released. One being the abduction of both Clary and Dru, by Janus and Ash respectively. This of course means that both Clary and Dru will be in Faerie for at least part, if not all, of the first book. The time in Faerie obviously moves differently, so I wonder what this means for the other characters in the series, as well as what happens outside of their storyline. As Cassie has said, Dru’s storyline is separate to Kit and Ty’s and this looks to be true considering they’ll be in entirely different realms.
    • Also seen in the newest excerpt, is Ty’s thesis for the Scholomance. It is said that he is simply trying to delay his graduation and therefore chooses the topic of how to get to Thule through the use of magic. However, I can’t help thinking that this could become useful in the future. Perhaps either Ash or Janus go back to Thule themselves and bring others with them, or they have use of something or someone from that realm. It brings up another point, which is Kit’s magical abilities. Kit says that he has no control over his magic, or at least not yet. Obviously, it seems evident that Kit’s magic will present itself at some point in the series, and could be related to this Thule theory.
    • It’s mentioned that The Last King of Faerie will take place four years after the events of Queen of Air and Darkness. The Cohort have obviously been inside of Idris for that length of time. It also seems as though discussions between the Clave and the Cohort have been taking place. I’m intrigued to see if anything has happened within the Cohort during that time, and how the progression of the internal Shadowhunter politics will affect the Downworld.
    • Kit’s nightmares are also quite interesting, especially as they feature Ty either turning dark or becoming possessed – by Lucifer perhaps? (as he is mentioned in passing in one of the excerpts, and seems significant in terms of the next book). Could the dreams be prophetic in some way? I saw someone say that Jem’s response to hearing about Kit’s nightmares was quite dismissive, by I honestly thought he was just trying to be reassuring, especially as he had experienced something similar at Kit’s age.
    • Lastly, is the uncertainty of Livvy’s future. Something happens to push Ty and Kit together in The Last King of Faerie, although this is most likely Dru’s disappearance, Livvy is also involved. I do believe Livvy will change in some way; it seems unlikely that she will stay as a ghost, linked to Ty, for the foreseeable. Many things are likely to change throughout the progression of the Wicked Powers series, and one of them will most likely be Livvy’s “in-between” existence.
